The “cone of shame” – all pet owners know how much their furry babies hate wearing that darn plastic cone wrapped around their necks. We watch as they walk into walls and doors or try to find creative ways to take it off, and we so wish we could help them. My dog’s saddest (and funniest) moment with the cone of shame happened as she, only 12 pounds and not very tall, ran around in the snow with it on. The cone acted as a snow shovel and scooped up huge amounts of the cold, fluffy stuff right into her face and gave her quite a chilly shock! It was hard for us not to laugh, but I’m guessing she didn’t find it funny at all.
Help your pet avoid the cone of shame
|Although the cone is can be necessary to keep pets from licking or pawing at injuries, there may be a way to avoid it sometimes! If your dog or cat suffers from recurring ear infections and often has to don the cone, you may be able to help. Many veterinarians have found that ear solutions, like Zymox Otic Enzymatic Ear Solution, in addition to treating ear infections, can also help prevent them and maintain ear health. And every ear infection prevented or treated quickly means two things: a happier, healthier pet and less time enduring the hated cone. Talk about a win-win situation!|
Great for pets at high risk for ear infections
These solutions can help all dogs and cats, but if your pet is at high risk for ear infections, we highly recommend taking preventive steps to keep those infections at bay. Some of the animals at higher risk are:
- Dogs with pendulous ears, like Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds
- Dogs with hairy inner ear flaps, like Miniature Poodles and Schnauzers
- Persian breed cats
At 1-800-PetMeds, we offer two types of Zymox Otic Enzymatic Ear Solution – one with hydrocortisone and one without. The added hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation and associated itching that many pets experience when they have an ear infection. So if you’re giving the ear solution just to prevent ear infections, Zymox without hydrocortisone may work best for you. But if your pet already has an infection or tends to scratch at his or her ears, you might want to give the hydrocortisone product to help ease your pet’s suffering during treatment and recovery. There are no reported side effects in either solution, so you can feel good choosing either one. And both are less costly than many prescription alternatives, which is a bonus.
Tip: Use only one ear product at a time
Although the ear solution is considered safe, you shouldn’t use it in conjunction with any other ear preparations. This is because adding another solution or clearning out the ears could interrupt the enzyme activity that is present during treatment, which could make the solution less effective. According to the Zymox website, you should only use Zymox Ear Cleanser after treatment with Zymox Otic Enzymatic Ear Solution, and only to keep dirty ears clean.
