Sammy the Waffle: An Adoption Story
Posted by Abby Rosenberg on June 14, 2013
Filed under PetMeds Spotlight

My husband and I adopted an older Golden Retriever/ Golden Lab mix from Georgetown, DE Animal Shelter. We had lost our beloved 14.5 year old Golden Retriever Deezl the day before Hurricane Sandy. Though I am sure Deezl walked to the Rainbow Bridge on his own after passing, his back legs gave out and he was failing quickly in his health. We were heartbroken that we lost our beloved family pet and sought a similar breed and found Waffles at the Georgetown Delaware Animal Shelter about 3 weeks after he passed. He was an older, quiet dog and a bit aloof.

Waffles was named by Georgetown Animal Shelter and being a rescue, no one knew his real name. We would call for Waffles in the backyard but he would not come.

My husband came up with the idea of looking up the 25 most popular dog names on the Internet. ”Waffles” was asleep in the living room and from the kitchen my husband began to call out names from the list one by one. FINALLY, at #22, my husband called the name Sam and the dog woke out of a sound sleep and went running into the kitchen with his tail wagging. His ENTIRE demeanor changed! So, in an effort to compromise and show respect to our friends at Georgetown who took such good care of him while he waited for his forever home, we named him Sammy the Waffle, The Ultimate Sesame Street Gangsta and for short we call him Sammy the Waffle. Sammy the Waffle loves to be walked. In fact he and my husband are inseparable and even our little 14.5 year old Pug Terrier Chenaenae will accompany them on cooler mornings. Walks or ”walkies” as we call them mean more to Sammy than anything else!

I am attaching a photo I shot of Sammy the Waffle and you will see little Chenaenae in the back.  I am also attaching his adoption photo – how could we resist.

All of our dogs needed emergency homes. We are proud of our pack past and present.

Thank you for sharing Sammy’s rescue story with us, Cheryl!

We’d love to feature your rescue dog or cat here, too! Just email PetMeds at rescuepet@petmeds.com and share your pet’s adoption story and a photo or two of your own rescue dog or cat.

OMG, so cute….and the name “Chanaenae” make me spit out my coffee, laughing.

I am glad. When I was writing Sammy’s story I thought about all those involved who made this happen. He has lots of “likes” and “shares” on the Petmeds’ Facebook site and LOTS of the same on the Georgetown Delaware Shelter SPCA site too. Chenaenae is her own dog for sure! Strong, seasoned and beautiful in her old age. Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you to Abby and Petmeds for publishing Sam’s story.
