The Rescue and Adoption Story of Martha
Posted by Abby Rosenberg on July 13, 2012

This week, Logan shares Martha’s rescue/adoption story with us:

Martha Washington was a very shy puppy

My childhood dog, Mountie, died at 17.5 years old about 3 years ago. I am now 27, and Mountie had been my partner since I was SEVEN years old. It was very hard to even imagine getting another dog and trying to replace my baby, but I knew I needed a little shadow, and my fiance (at the time, now wife) had a not-so-well-behaved Westie, Wellington, that needed a companion.

I looked on PetFinders.com almost every day starting a few weeks after Mountie passed, but I never felt anything but longing for my little girl. One day I ran across this little baby:  Jacy. I fell in love at one look, and she in some ways reminded me of my Mountie. I drove the 2.5 hours to Sistersville, WV and adopted her. We named our little girl Martha Washington.  Martha had lots of hyperactivity/chewing issues, and was very shy and afraid of most people. It did not help when she jumped off of a piece of furniture and broke her leg when she was only about 7 months old.

Martha will be turning 2 in a couple of weeks. She and Wellington have become best friends. Martha has developed into an athletic, energetic and kind dog. She is great around other dogs and children. She often makes friends with animals people say “don’t get along” with other dogs, including my brother’s 95 pound Pittbull, Aviator. I couldn’t imagine life without the fourth member of our family.
