Fresh out of college, I accepted a job in a small town in Mississippi where I didn’t know a soul. After a week of settling into my apartment and starting my new job, I knew the perfect addition to my new life would be a humane society kitten. I didn’t want to bring a newly adopted kitten home and then have to leave for work the next morning, so I planned to go Friday after I got off work. But living in a small town, I figured adoption rates weren’t very high, and maybe I’d go on Monday and just see the kittens in person to see which one I wanted. The first cat I saw looked identical to my childhood cat who I had for 15 years and loved dearly. I knew she would be mine come Friday. I visited again on Wednesday so that my soon-to-be new kitten would get used to my smell. As I was holding her, I looked around at the other cages and laid my eyes on the sweetest looking cat, all by herself in the bottom row of cages in the corner, sitting so pristinely and regal. I put the childhood look-alike kitten back in her cage to hold the new one I laid eyes on. As I held the new kitten, I knew come Friday I’d have to adopt both as they were both so sweet and beautiful. When I arrived on Friday to adopt the two girls, I entered the room and my look-alike cat had been adopted! So I immediately looked at the second cat and told the worker that I wanted her without taking a second look around the room! She looked at me like I was crazy — she hadn’t known about my visits that week and how I had already planned two adopted two kittens that day. She asked me if I was sure, and I said absolutely. I filled out the paper work and took Abby home. That was almost 6 years ago, and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Abby brings me so much joy and love. I cannot imagine my life without her. She is the sweetest, most playful, cuddliest, funniest little girl I’ve ever known. I’m so lucky she is mine.
Thanks for sharing Abby’s adoption story with us, Shea! We’re glad you were able to adopt her, and it seems like she has a great home with you!
