“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals” ~ Immanuel Kant
Celebrated every year since 1915, the week of May 6th – May 12th is designated as Be Kind to Animals Week. This special week is observed by thousands of animal shelters, and is a week to celebrate the special role our pets have in our lives, and to encourage the compassionate, humane treatment of all animals. Animals depend upon us to treat them with kindness and respect. How can you help spread this important message?
- Be a voice for animals. Report any suspected animal cruelty, abuse or mistreatment to your local animal control, humane society or law enforcement.
- Adopt your next pet from a shelter and/or volunteer to help out at your local shelter. If you’re not able to volunteer or adopt, consider a monetary donation or a donation of needed supplies to your local animal shelter.
- Give the best possible care to your own pet. Make sure your pet is spayed or neutered, receives regular veterinary care, and has updated identification should he or she become lost. Buy or make a new toy for your pet, or just spend extra time with your pet.
- Appreciate and protect wildlife. You can make the environment a better place for wildlife by recycling, picking up litter, or planting a wildlife garden in your own backyard. Never try to keep a wild animal as a pet.
