Dog Food Recall: Pedigree

You are probably aware of the pet food recall due to the risk of Salmonella contamination that involved several different brands of dry dog food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods in their Gaston, SC plant.  The newest pet food recall involves Pedigree canned dog food manufactured by Mars Petcare US. This is a voluntary recall, and only affects a limited range of three varieties of their Pedigree weight management canned dog foods. The reason for the recall is a possible choking risk due to small pieces of blue plastic which may potentially be mixed into the food.  The recalled products have a “Best Before” date between 2/24/14 and 3/23/14, and involve the following three products:

  • Pedigree+ Healthy Weight Premium Ground Entree in Meaty Juices, UPC code 2310034974
  • Pedigree Weight Management Meaty Ground Dinner Beef & Liver Dinner in Meaty Juices, UPC code 2310001913
  • Pedigree Weight Management Meaty Ground Dinner Chicken & Rice Dinner in Meaty Juices, UPC code 2310023045

Mars reports that they have identified the source of the plastic and the issue has been resolved. To date, there have been no reports of injury or illness, and no other Pedigree products are affected. If you have cans of the involved pet food, you are encouraged to discard the affected cans or return them to the retailer for a full refund or exchange. Questions about the recall can be directed to Mars at 1-877-720-3335 from 8:00 am – 7:00 pm CST.
