To most of us, our pets are irreplaceable, and we couldn’t imagine our life without them. What steps can we take to make sure our pets remain safe and healthy?
While there are some dogs and cats that just cannot be kept inside for various reasons, keeping your pet inside is one of the best things you can do to ensure his safety. Pets kept outdoors may be exposed to diseases, extreme hot and cold temperatures, accidents, and encounters with other dogs or wildlife. Your dog can safely enjoy the outside while accompanying you on a leash, and of course, exercise is also important to your pet.
Regular visits to the vet for routine check-ups are important, too. It is much better to make sure your pet gets routine preventative care than to wait until your pet becomes ill to take him to the vet. Follow your vet’s recommended vaccination schedule. Be sure to spay or neuter your pet, which is part of being a responsible pet owner.
Choose a high-quality pet food, and pay attention to any pet food recalls. You should also be careful about the treats you choose for your pet. Always provide a plentiful supply of fresh, clean water. Regulate the amount you feed your pet to prevent obesity, which can cause health problems for your pet.
Make sure your pet is properly groomed and protected from fleas and ticks. Your dog should also be on a heartworm preventative such as Heartgard Plus, to ensure he is protected from heartworms. Remember, it is much easier to prevent than to treat heartworms!
Provide plenty of quality time playing with your dog or cat. Pets need companionship to thrive and be happy, and appreciate playtime with you. Remember, our pets depend upon us to keep them healthy and safe!
