Virginia German Shepherd Rescue (VGSR) is a non-profit rescue group dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing German Shepherds in Virginia and the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Founded in 2001 and staffed by volunteers, this organization provides a foster home for these unwanted, abandoned or surrendered dogs while working to find them a loving, permanent home.
While the dogs are in their foster home, they are provided with love, attention and socialization. This allows the caregiver to evaluate the foster dog in order to place the dog in a home which is the best match to ensure a successful adoption. Additionally, the dogs receive necessary veterinary care such as vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying or neutering. To date, this organization has found good homes for over 3,300 dogs.
If you live in the Virginia/D.C. area and are interested in adopting, every weekend VGSR hosts an adoption event where you can meet German Shepherds available for adoption, or just learn more about the breed. The VGSR website also maintains a list of dogs available for adoption. After completing an adoption application, your application will be reviewed and a home visit will be arranged.
If you’d like to help but aren’t able to adopt, VGSR is in need of more foster homes because there are currently German Shepherds in shelters waiting for a foster home. You can also volunteer to help in other ways such as at adoption events, transporting dogs, fundraising or home checks. This group gratefully accepts your monetary donation which is tax-deductible, or donations of much-needed supplies. PetMeds was proud to help support Virginia German Shepherd Rescue with a donation of pet supplies.
