Share Your Pet’s Rescue Story with Us

At PetMeds, we love your pets, and we enjoy seeing photos and reading stories about your beautiful dogs and cats. Stories about rescue pets are especially inspiring, so we’d like to share stories about your own rescue pets here. Every Friday, we will feature a story about a special rescue dog or cat that found a forever home with one of you! To start, I’ll share my own rescue pet story.

Harley was 6 months old when he was adopted from the shelter

This is Harley, although he was named “Neptune” at the shelter. He was born to a feral cat that came to the rescue shelter to be spayed and released. Since the mother cat was found to be full term, the decision was made to deliver the kittens. The entire litter went into foster care until they were old enough to come back to the shelter where I was volunteering at the time. Sadly, while all of Harley’s littermates were adopted, he was overlooked. When he was 6 months old, I decided to adopt Harley myself. Harley is four years old now, and I feel lucky to share my home with such a funny, loving and special cat.

We had taken a stray outdoor cat under our wing back in June of 2011. He was our fist cat. He would come in the house and stay a while but always wanted to be outside. Sadly he past away February of this year. We were devestated. My 4 year old son took it very hard as I did also. His toys and bowls left a reminder that he was no longer here. I contemplated whether or not to get another cat. We had not been looking to get one to begin with, he had found us. But after a few days I felt that we needed another to help heal from the loss of our Sammie and we’d also be giving another deserving cat a great home and love. We visited several different animal shelters, Petsmart and Petco, looking for a kitty with the right fit for a home with a 4 year old child and a dog. We drove down to the Burlington County Animal Shelter in NJ and looked over the many, many cats they had there. They had kittens all they way up to senior cats. After reading there info cards on their cages and visiting with a few of them, we came across a long haired black kitty, approximately 1 year old. Her eyes struck me as soon as I saw her, a bright beautiful gold. Reminded me so much of our Sammie. They let us hold her and I just melted as she went limp and she pressed her faced into my shoulder and purred. She sounded liek a motorboat, Lol! She was calm and sweet. We filled out an adoption application that night (Monday) and they called us to pick her up on Friday after recovering from her spay operation. I’m so glad we drove down there. It was well worth the 25 minute drive. She has turned out to be the BEST cat ever!!!! She is super tolerant of my 4 year old son and loves to play with our 8 1/2 year old dog. I can’t imagine our household without her now. She’s just wonderful. 🙂 I will definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a pet to adopt over buying. It may take a little longer to find the right pet but it’s definitely worth it. Just take the time to visit with the animals and you’ll know when you’ve found the right one. You’ll feel it in your heart.

Me and my boyfriend have been together for 7 years and have been trying to have a baby for 5 years now. We did all the works to make things happen but we were not lucky enough. Until last year I told him that maybe we should start with a pet. So we both agreed to have a dog. I wanted to have a bichon frise and have been looking to buy one. People I knew have convinced mo to adopt a dog instead of buying one. So I signed up for Petfinder and saw a bunch of cute ones. This is where my nightmare began 🙂 I filled out applications with questions that I thougt was kind of interesting! I felt that I was adopting a child. I would even call my bofriend at work to help me with some questions and his response is, aren’t you adopting a dog? lol Everynight I was on line searching for the right one. I have been turned down three times for the reason that our personality doesn’t match. Really? So, what I have been doing is just savingh my prospects because now I am more frustrated than ever! I acn’t have a baby and I can not even adopt a dog? Come on:-( Then one day one of my clients sent me a text saying that she saw this one place in Sta. Monica who have bichons for adoption. She gave me the name of the lady who runs it and her number. So, I called her right away. That weekend she mentioned that they will be at Petsmart at 2pm. Me and my friend went and I was so excited and happy to see a all these beautiful bichon mix. Then, my friend approached me and said, “here, take this! This is your dog.” And I’m like, whose dog is that? She said, it yours! I’m like ,don’t play this joke on me give that back to the owner. ” You see, this dog is too cute to be homeless… I was thinking.
But, she wasn’t joking! The dog’s given name is Freddie. I asked them if I could foster him first and show him to my BF just to make sure that we are all a perfecr match. Took a picture of him and sent it to my BF and he said ok and that he is cute! When we took Fredie home,I told my BF that this dog looked familiar and I checked my saved dog on my profile at Petfindre and wallah! It’s him!!! So, we realized that Freddie is really meant for us. Our first baby boy! The most loved and spoiled one. All our lives changed… we are now a family. He’s been with us for a year now but it felt that we raised him and has been with us forever. But, not only that, he has a sister now an English Lab who will be turning one year old.
Oops, as the saying goes, once you have one you want more! I’m thinking of a Yorkie this time ….:-)
