Shelter Spotlight: G.R.E.A.T Rescue of NE Florida

G.R.E.A.T Rescue of NE Florida is a recent recipient of a 1-800-PetMeds Cares™ product donation through our shelter donations program. You can learn about how 1-800-PetMeds Cares here.

Since 2000, G.R.E.A.T Rescue of NE Florida has matched 983 wonderful Golden Retrievers with loving, responsible families. Based in the Jacksonville-St. Augustine area, GREAT is affiliated with the Golden Retriever Club of America National Rescue Committee, and is a non-profit organization.

At any given time, five to fifteen Golden Retrievers can be found under GREAT Rescue’s care. Thankfully, many of the dogs are placed into loving homes shortly after coming into their rescue program and after staying with a foster family who helps evaluate, train, and most importantly love the newly rescued Golden Retriever. Each adoptable dog will have received all vaccinations, be heartworm negative, spayed/neutered, wormed, and micro-chipped. The organization even has a special Senior-to-Senior program where those ages 70 or older can adopt a Golden Retriever who is older than 8 years, and receive 50% off the regular adoption fee!

What makes GREAT Rescue unique, is Operation Turkey Goldens in which they help rescue Golden Retrievers from the country of Turkey. Golden Retrievers are taken to Turkey as puppies where they are considered a status symbol. However, when they become adults and are no longer wanted, they are dumped in forests, on the streets, or in one of Istanbul’s 32 animal shelters where they are spayed/neutered and then turned back out to fend for themselves. Golden Retrievers are not natural born fighters, so their life is very difficult with no food or water source. They must scavenge, fight off feral dog packs, and try to navigate the traffic without being hit. In fact, most do not live beyond two or three years of age. GREAT Rescue tries to bring a handful of Golden Retrievers over every year with the fund that they specifically raise for their transportation costs. The organization has brought six dogs to Florida in 2016, and four in 2017.

On April 8th, GREAT Rescue will be holding their 15th annual GoldenFest! Enjoy contests, vendor booths, a silent auction and refreshments while your dog plays at Dogwood Park. GoldenFest is one of GREAT Rescue’s main fundraisers, and all the funds raised in the auction go directly to the medical needs of rescued Golden Retrievers waiting for their forever homes.

Meet Holly!

“Holly, a senior Golden Retriever (approximately age 10), was a stray for 3 weeks before the rural animal control could catch her this past December (hence her name). She was very smelly, malnourished and her teeth were very bad. GREAT took her to one of their rescue vets, had her bathed, vaccinated, tested for worms and evaluated. She had 8 teeth removed, and has been recovering in a foster home. Her foster writes that: Little Miss Holly now weighs 54 lbs and finally wags a lot. She’s become my little shadow. I can’t even get into the bathroom without company. Here is a photo of her and one of her kitty friends. She REALLY likes cats.”
